I am a long time fisherman, but I have recently gotten serious about fly fishing. I am going to start tying my own flies, and I need some info about what kind of equipment to buy.
I have looked at the starter kits, and generally read that the equipment included is of lower quality, and is not great if you want to be a serious fly tyer. What brand/type of equipment would you recommend to someone who wants it to last through years of use and increasing experience?

Price is important as I am a college student with limited resources. Thanks for the help.

Fly-fishing has gained a great popularity over the years as a calming sport. The excitement of luring the fish, catching it and having it for lunch or dinner or even simply the soothing sounds of running water in a beautiful scenic stream have made fly fishing quite an experience to remember, for the young and the old alike. However, to really enjoy the sport, you need to have the right kind of equipments.

Now, when it comes to the purchasing of the right type of fly-fishing equipment, it has someow become a challenge. However, it adds to the fly-fishing experience package and therefore worth the extra effort it takes to procure the best of fly-fishing equipment and with a little practice and the right type of fishing gear, fly-fishing can be a very relaxing and enjoyable sport.

Now let us have the short list of what to look for in the market to have your fly fishing equipment intact for the show.

First on the list is the rod. This is what allows the fly or lure to be delivered to the correct point in the water to allow the fish to be subdued quickly. Traditionally, the rod used is an 8’6 split cane. Fly fishing rods were originally made from flexible but sturdy wood but then later on, bamboo rods were introduced and these became the standard fly-fishing equipment since then. Bamboo was treated and reinforced to make the best quality fly fishing rods out of it. Currently, advanced technology has made fly-fishing rods from carbon fiber or fiberglass. The fly fishing rod is similar to a normal fishing rod, only that it is a little heavier because the weight factor gives a clean and smooth cast to the fishing pole. The smoothness of the cast can vary from pole to pole. A sturdy and heavy fishing pole is an essential part of fly-fishing equipment.

Second is the reel. The reels used in fly-fishing are bigger and heavier in comparison to the normal fishing reel and they have a distinctive design that are much more durable compared to the normal fishing poles. Fly fishing rods and reels work together and one must consider their compatibility to each other at the time of purchase so you have to make sure that they have to work smoothly together.

Now for the third component of the fly-fishing equipment, you need to have a replicated fly. These flies are designed to lure the fish with specific types of flies for particular species of fish. Hence, the most important aspect of fly-fishing is to consider what type of fish you want to catch so that you can also decide what fly to choose. Choosing the right kind of fly is the most important aspect of fly-fishing equipment because this will determine your successful catch.

You can have other accessories for your equipment, like the floatant and the sinkant which will both help you in the process of catching the fish. Floatant will of course make the flies float in water. On the other hand, the sinkant will make sure that last 12 inches or so of tippet do not sit proud on the water’s surface and frighten fish. By using sinkant the tippet sits in the surface layer and becomes invisible. Whatever equipment you choose to go with your fly fishing experience, you need to choose the best of the equipment to ensure your success in the fishing arena.

The vice is the most obvious and probably the most important piece of fly-tying equipment. Without a vice to hold your hook steady, you simply wouldn’t be able to tie your fly at all.

Most fly-tyers will recommend that you purchase the “most expensive” or “best vice you can afford” and this is in many respects true, however, I thoroughly recommend getting the cheapest vice you can find before you invest too heavily in fly-tying. As a hobby and an art form, fly-tying is not for everyone. It requires patience and no little amount of dexterity to become a successful fly-tyer, and many people I know never got on tying flies after spending more than a few pennies on expensive equipment. I really do recommend a cheap and cheerful starter pack for beginners, and then progressing, or graduating, to some high quality equipment, not least because you’ll appreciate it all the more when you do!

As with most of the items we talk about at Fly-fishing.in, most of them are available to purchase online – so we’re going to do a little run-through of the fly-tying vices you can buy on the internet for delivery to your door.

Naturally, there is more choice out there in local tackle shops, and good ones will even let you have a little go with bits and bobs before you buy – you should try to seek out these hidden gems near you as the good quality tackle shop may well become a thing of the past pretty soon.

Delrin Rotary Vice – £59 Orvis

At £59 from Orvis, the Delrin Rotary Vice isn’t hugely expensive and it does everything you would want from a mid to high-range vice, at a price which is not excessive (unlike some items I’ve found in Orvis over the years!).

The jaws can take a hook from a tiny size 28 up to a whopping 2/0 so your average trout man will never need another vice no matter how fiddly or giant he makes his flies.

Importantly, indeed the vice’s main feature, this vice rotates, which allows one to varnish or touch up otherwise difficult to reach sections of the flies undercarriage – some flies are easier tied “upside down” due to the requirements of the pattern.

The vice also incorporates a thread bobbin rest, which, when you don’t have one, you appreciate the need for!

Turrall Fly Tying Vice – £13.19 TackleShop

I started fly tying with a vice much the same as this one. It won’t do much more than holding a fly in place, just about, but these entry level vices are perfect for a beginner because they are not expensive. Lets be honest, who, at the age of 12 or 13 has £60 to spend on a vice when you could buy a whole setup rig for the same money that would be perfectly adequate for a couple of years or so, at least until you learn whether or not you want to continue with fly-tying as a hobby.

This vice will not hold your thread bobbin (but you can fashion some way to do this for free – I know because I used to!) for you, and neither will it rotate, but you can make most patterns adequately with a vice like this one. If you can afford better, then get better, but this will do.

Turrall Lever Fly Tying Vice – £9.89

This vice is largely the same as the one above, except that it comes in at under £10 and is black rather than chrome finish.

Again, this vice is far from perfect, but it would make an affordable entry into fly tying for a novice or young tier who wanted to test the waters before purchasing a more expensive and comprehensive vice for the future.

It is likely that the vice will wear out a little with use too (I had a similar design which did) and it will have difficulty controlling hooks with long shanks or gripping particularly small hooks without distorting them slightly, however, for the money, this is adequate, and it will at least hold a hook while you practice imitating aquatic life with feathers and thread.
